Product Overview

The BOTDA-1000 series of distributed fiber optic temperature and strain sensors are a distributed fiber optic sensing solution based on Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) technology. Developed by Wuxi Brillouin Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., the BOTDA-1000 series sensors utilize the Brillouin scattering signal generated during the propagation of the stimulated amplified optical signal to calculate the relationship between Brillouin frequency shift and temperature/strain. This enables the detection of temperature and strain variations around the fiber optic cable.

The BOTDA-1000 series of distributed fiber optic temperature and strain sensors (BOTDA) not only possess the advantages of long-distance and low-cost typical distributed fiber optic temperature sensors (DTS), but also have the capability to simultaneously detect temperature and strain. This makes them more powerful, versatile, accurate, and cost-effective.

Product Details:

BOTDA measurement principle: In BOTDA, pulsed light signals (probe light) and continuous light signals (pump light) are injected into the fiber optic from both ends. When the frequency difference between the pulsed light and the continuous light matches the Brillouin frequency shift in a certain region of the fiber, stimulated Brillouin amplification occurs, and energy transfer takes place between the two light beams. By continuously adjusting the frequencies of the two lasers based on the relationship between the Brillouin frequency shift and the fiber optic strain or temperature, the continuous light power coupled out from one end of the fiber can be monitored. The frequency difference corresponding to the maximum energy transfer in each small segment of the fiber can be determined, thus obtaining temperature and strain information and enabling distributed measurement.

Basic Information:

The Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) system, specifically the long-distance BOTDA-1000 (capable of measuring temperature and strain along a 120km fiber optic cable), is a self-developed product by Brillouin Technology.

The BOTDA-1000, also known as a distributed fiber optic temperature and strain sensing system, utilizes the Brillouin backscattering effect and the optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) principle. It is the latest generation of distributed fiber optic sensing systems internationally. It enables the measurement of temperature, strain, and spectrum at various points along the fiber optic cable over ultra-long distances. The system offers a unidirectional measurement range of up to 120km, with a measurement accuracy of 1℃/20με and a measurement time of less than 60 seconds.

The host unit of the system, the BLY-BOTDA1000, uses standard communication single-mode optical fibers (ITU-T G.652, G.655, G.657, etc.) as sensors. It combines the functions of transmission and sensing, allowing real-time monitoring of subtle temperature and strain changes. The system supports multi-channel measurements (2-16 channels) and finds important applications in various fields such as long-distance oil and gas pipelines, submarine optical-electric composite cables, overhead power lines, dams, and bridges.

Currently, there are less than 10 companies worldwide with the research and production capabilities for Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry equipment. Wuxi Brillouin Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. has been developing and commercially utilizing the Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis system for 8 years since its inception in 2015. It has established a reputation for stability, reliability, and outstanding performance.

Product Applications:

Widely applied in important fields such as long-distance oil and gas pipelines, submarine optoelectronic composite cables, overhead power lines, dams, and bridges.
